Eddie Turner, "The Turner Diaries" (NorthernBlues) *** Cuban-born, Chicago-reared guitarist Eddie Turner takes chances artistically on his second solo CD, "The Turner Diaries." But unlike Turner's dynamic debut outing, last year's acclaimed "Rise," the dozen tracks on "Diaries" are hit and miss. On some tunes, it sounds as if Turner's main goal is to prove he knows how to use all his special-effects pedals. There's more to playing funky, soulful blues-rock music than fuzz tones, wah-wahs and phasers, though. On the real keepers, most notably "Confessions" and "Shake for Me," Taylor captures the roiling beat of the Delta as he lays dazzling layers of hypnotic lead. The founding member of Zephyr and longtime axman for Otis Taylor's band clearly wants to stake his claim as linear psychedelic blues-rock guitar champion, descending directly from Jimi Hendrix. And the good news is he's done nothing on "Diaries" to prevent him from contending for that crown. Jeff Johnson, Chicago Sun-Times
